Understand the Septic Inspection Process

As the name implies, a septic inspection is a process of evaluating the components of a septic system to determine if everything is working properly.

A septic inspection is performed by an experienced septic inspection company to help property owners determine the overall health of their septic system and if pumping is necessary.

A septic inspection should be performed at least once every year to ensure proper function.

If you’re a new homeowner or someone who’s not familiar with how a septic system works, you may not understand what goes into the septic inspection process.

In this article, we will walk you through the septic inspection process to help you understand what it entails.

There are two types of septic inspections:

Visual Inspections

This process is usually performed by a home inspector and it’s normally done when buying or selling a house.

A visual septic inspection entails asking a few questions that give some indication about the health of a septic system. The inspector will evaluate a septic system’s maintenance history, check the water pressure, flush all the toilets, and check for standing water around a septic tank and drainfield.

A visual inspection can give you a rough idea of the health of your septic system, but it isn’t going to reveal what’s happening inside your septic tank.

Full Inspections

A full septic inspection is a much more detailed inspection that is done by a septic tank company that is equipped with the proper equipment and tools for the job.

This type of inspection will involve removing the lid covering the tank and inserting a long calibrated rod to test the level of sludge in the tank. The inspector will also test for leakages and inspect the baffles to ensure they are working properly. Like other components of a septic tank, baffles become worn out at some point. Regular inspection will help you determine when to replace baffles.

Lastly, the inspector will assess the condition of filters, the pattern of water flow into and out of the septic tank, the drainfield, and the soil below the drainfield.

Why Having a Septic Inspection Is Important

A septic inspection helps homeowners to identify the level of sludge in the tank, thereby revealing when the tank needs to be pumped out. Besides, inspecting your septic system regularly enables you to detect minor septic issues and fix them before they become major problems.

A comprehensive septic inspection enables property owners to determine the types of maintenance that are required on a septic system at any given time. Keeping up with regular septic inspection not only improves septic system performance, but also prolongs its lifespan.
